Caltrans Answers Your Questions: Storm Water Project on SR-22

We were recently asked, “what kind of landscape project is that on SR-22 near Studebaker Rd. in Long Beach?”

It is actually a storm water project. It is what we call a biological filtration canal or bioswale. Bioswales use native plants rather than concrete as a natural means to reduce erosion and treat storm water by filtering out contaminants that runoff the freeway. Under direction of Caltrans engineers, landscape architects, and biologists, an earthen canal was constructed, native plants were planted, and mulch was applied. In addition to the environmental and structural benefits, some have commented that the plants have improved the aesthetics of the area.
