The Pomona Freeway and Its Wild Residents

Deer living along the Pomona Freeway (SR-60)? Maybe in Riverside County, but not Los Angeles County, there’s too much traffic on SR-60 and I thought the deer moved away a long time ago.

Our Environmental Planning Division initiated a preliminary study to determine the level of deer activity in a green space near SR-60 in Hacienda Heights near Crossroads Parkway.

Caltrans biologists knew that there were deer living near the highway. Fortunately, there have been no reports of motorists hitting deer but there have been sightings of them on the highway.

Biologists placed motion-detecting cameras on the slopes along SR-60 and as time went by, the cameras captured pictures of a few deer and their woodland friends.

Editor's Note: This blog entry previously stated that there were no sightings of deer on the highway, that statement was incorrect.
