Thank You, Los Angeles! (Again!)

Usually, sequels aren’t as good as the original. But in the case of Carmageddon II, the sequel was just as awesome, thanks to the people of Los Angeles who heeded the call to avoid getting on the freeway. HUGE thank you to everyone who biked and walked and took transit, and all of you who ate, shopped and played locally while rediscovering your neighborhoods. We couldn't have done it without you!

I-405 opened almost six hours ahead of schedule last night. Northbound opened a little after 9 p.m., and southbound opened at 11:30 p.m. Here’s a shot of the first cars to drive on northbound I-405:

Traffic volumes and delays were down all weekend long compared with a normal weekend. Once again, Los Angeles rose to the challenge.

Here’s the payoff: When the new I-405 carpool lane is complete next year, it will be the longest in the nation, stretching over 73 miles between Orange and Los Angeles counties. It will mean less congestion and faster travel times, saving you about a minute per mile.
