Ask Caltrans: Why does the Grapevine (I-5) close when it snows?

We generally get this question from folks who are from Northern California, the Midwest, or the East Coast.

If the conditions on I-5 present possible hazards to motorists, the CHP working coordination with Caltrans will close the freeway, generally between Parker Road and Gorman.  Additionally, many of the motorists in Southern California are not prepared or experienced enough to drive in icy conditions, which in turn could lead to traffic collisions.

“Snow on the Grapevine? District 7 is Ready!” from Inside 7, our district’s newsletter, will help answer a lot questions (there’s a really nice video our snow crews at work too!).
