Dig Caltrans Digs

Today marks famed Paleontologist and Anthropologist Mary Leakey’s 100th birthday. You’re probably wondering what that has to do with Caltrans.

Pictured are fossils found during past Caltrans construction projects.

Along with many other professions, Caltrans utilizes the services of staff geologists, archaeologists, and a paleontologist to protect California’s natural resources and minimize environmental impacts of transportation projects.

These finds allow us to better understand California's ecosystems before human beings.  This is also an example of the diverse range of professions contributing to Caltrans' mission to operate, maintain, and build California’s highway system.
