Sneak Peek: SR-170 to I-5 Connector

If you drive I-5 in the San Fernando Valley, no doubt you’ve observed the new northbound SR-170 to northbound I-5 connector going up — it’s pretty hard to miss. The connector will open in April (assuming the weather cooperates), but in the meantime, here’s a sneak peek at the structure, a view you can’t see from your car.

Here’s the top of the connector looking north:


In this shot, you can see the left side of the connector as it curves around northbound SR-170: 


And here’s what it looks like from underneath: 


The wood is falsework — temporary supports — which will be removed in the coming weeks. The black sheeting on the hillside prevents erosion and protects the roadway.

The project is also constructing a carpool connector between I-5 and SR-170, building carpool lanes in both directions of I-5 between SR-170 and SR-118, widening several crossings and realigning ramps. The entire project will be completed in late 2014.
