FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Repairs Underway to Open the Glendale Freeway (SR-2) and Golden State Freeway (I-5) Closures After Tanker Fire - Update #2

Los Angeles – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has been working to shore up the northbound SR-2 to northbound I-5 connector tunnel in order to safely open all lanes of I-5 above.  The contractor will continue to construct temporary support structures until all of the lanes of I-5 can be opened safely.  All lanes of northbound I-5 are expected to open by early morning Tuesday, July 16.  All lanes of southbound I-5 are expected open by noon tomorrow.  The #3 and #4 lanes of northbound I-5 were opened 4:50 p.m. today.

Once the shoring system is complete and roadway is deemed safe, it is expected that all lanes of northbound I-5 lanes closures will be open.

Closures currently in place:
Northbound SR-2 to Northbound I-5
Southbound I-5, the #1 and #2 lanes are closed from Los Feliz to Stadium Way
Northbound I-5, the #1 and #2 lanes

The intense heat from the tanker fire on Saturday, July 14 caused extensive damage to the pavement, walls, support columns, drainage, and lighting within the tunnel requiring the closure of all lanes of northbound I-5 at SR-2 and two lanes of southbound I-5. The northbound SR-2/northbound I-5 connector is closed indefinitely.  Caltrans will take core samples of the concrete in the tunnel to determine the extent of damage and determine a permanent repair solution.

Caltrans would like to thank the motoring public for their patience and understanding during to this incident.  Detours are posted.  Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area, use public transit, or use alternate routes.
Caltrans and CHP encourages motorists to Slow for the Cone Zone and Move Over.
