Repairs Underway to Open the Glendale Freeway (SR-2) and Golden State Freeway (I-5) Closures After Tanker Fire – Update #3

Los Angeles – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has opened all lanes of the northbound Golden State Freeway (I-5) as of 11 p.m.  All lanes of southbound I-5 are expected to open by the morning commute on Tuesday, July 16.

The intense heat from the tanker fire on Saturday, July 14 caused extensive damage to the pavement, walls, support structures, drainage, and lighting within the northbound SR-2/northbound I-5 connector tunnel, requiring it to be closed indefinitely.  Caltrans will take core samples of the concrete in the tunnel to determine the extent of damage and determine a permanent repair solution.
Caltrans would like to thank the motoring public for their patience and understanding during to this incident.

Caltrans and CHP encourages motorists to Slow for the Cone Zone and Move Over.
