A Peek Behind the K-Rail: Paving Project in North Los Angeles County

As anyone who drives I-5 in north Los Angeles County knows all too well, a paving project is underway between Vista Del Lago Road and the Kern County line (more info here). There's a bypass lane in place on southbound I-5, a traffic split on northbound I-5, and multiple long-term closures. Currently, the Gorman Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 is closed (through Sept. 20), as is the westbound SR-138 connector to southbound I-5 (through Sept. 30).

To give you a better sense of why the closures are necessary, here's a look at the work underway on southbound I-5 near Gorman. Here crews are excavating the roadbed:

Here comes the concrete:

And here it is, almost done (minus grinding and striping):

The project will be suspended during the winter months — November to April — because it's too cold for the concrete to cure properly. The entire project will wrap up in about two years.
