PCH: Caltrans Prevents Highway From Washing Away

Recent storms battered the Southern California coastline, threatening to wash away one of California’s valuable resources, the Pacific Coast Highway (SR-1).

Caltrans quickly mobilized to repair damaged shoreline protection (rip rap or large boulders) along SR-1 south of Mugu Rock to prevent the highway from washing away after high surf undermined portions of the highway.  There was no damage to highway, but the imminent threat was very real and close.

As seen the pictures, contractor crews place geotech fibers on the soil before placing large boulders on top.  This process will help prevent or slow erosion along the shore.

This project is expected to finish by Friday, March 7.
