If you drive southbound I-5 in Burbank, you've probably noticed a lot of work going on this week near the Buena Vista Street off-ramp. If you could peek behind the k-rail (and please do NOT try to peek behind the k-rail), you would see this:
So what's going on? Crews are clearing and grubbing (that's construction-speak for removing vegetation) and excavating for a new retaining wall. The retaining wall is part of the Empire Project, which — among other things — is widening the freeway to make room for a carpool lane in each direction between Magnolia Boulevard and Buena Vista Street. Clearing and grubbing is expected to wrap up today. The excavation work will continue through August 19.
