Behind the K-Rail: Inside a Bore Pit

If you've driven in the vicinity of the Empire Center in Burbank, no doubt you've noticed all the construction work underway, including bore pits on Victory Place north of Empire Avenue. The purpose of the bore pits is to set up bore-driving equipment, which will drive a 24-inch steel casing through the ground approximately 110 feet from a jacking pit to a receiving pit. The bore pits are about 30 feet deep, 20 feet wide and 12 feet long. Here's what it looks like inside a bore pit:

Eventually, a plastic conduit will be inserted inside the steel casing, and communication lines will go inside the casing. Manholes will be built inside the pit, and the area around the manhole will be backfilled with dirt. The entire operation will take four to five weeks. The work is part of the Empire Project.
