Rio Hondo Bridge Repair

Beginning October 16 Caltrans will begin repairs on the Rio Hondo Bridge that was damaged by fire.
Structural engineers found that heat from the flames warped 8 girders, peeled the paint on 13 steel girders, sheared off bolts on the lateral steel supports, damaged bearings and delaminated concrete.  The damage was mostly concentrated under southbound lanes.

Construction is scheduled in two stages. Stage 1, which consists of replacing the bridge deck of southbound I-5 lanes 3 and 4. Stage 2 is scheduled to start on October 23 to replace the bridge deck on southbound I-5 lanes 1 and 2 and northbound I-5 lane 1.

This project will require future closures.
