Tunnel Washing in Los Angeles County

Tunnel washing truck in action on NB I-405 transition to NB I-5 in San Fernando 7/19/2016
Just what was Caltrans doing closing I-405 in San Fernando last night?

Well, it is a tunnel washing project and there's more to come on other routes in Los Angeles County.

Caltrans will close up to two lanes of northbound Arroyo Seco Parkway (SR-110) to wash the walls and ceilings of the four tunnels near Dodger Stadium from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Wednesday, July 20 to Friday, July 22.

A signed detour will be in place.  Delays are expected.  Closures are subject to change.

A Caltrans tunnel washing crew using a specially outfitted truck with water jets and carwash-like brushes will scrape away dirt, soot, and grim from the concrete walls of the interchanges and tunnels.  A biodegradable soap is used.

Here's the tunnel washing crew in action at the transition road from northbound I-405 to northbound I-5:

The tunnels are washed to enhance motorist safety.  All of the water run-off is captured and hauled away in a hazardous material tanker truck.

The California Highway Patrol will be on duty.  Please Be Work Zone Alert.
